Thousands of bees in Australia will be attached the sensor by the scientists in order to track movement and prevent disease. According to Reuters, the small sensors which weigh about 5 mg and about 2.5 mm2 in size will be attached to bees after they sleep by cooling.
Small bees will have fur cut before attaching the sensors units. The sensors which identify radio frequency can act as a security control electronic card for automobiles. When sensor is attached to bees, it will record the path of this insect, thereby helping scientists to establish three-dimensional images of bees’ activities.
Tiny sensors which are attached to honeybees help to limit the risk of bees’ disappearance from the hive and effects from the parasite.
Expert group of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and Australia national scientific agencies said, when the sensors are attached to the bees, researchers and farmers will limit mysteriously bees’ disappearance and control the impact of parasites such as varroa mite on them. This is cause of significant reduction in the number of bees in recent years.
Bees are species which have an important role in the pollination process and contribute to increase the productivity of many crops. Therefore, this study can be expected to support farmers in protection for their crops garden.
As expected, the tiny sensors will be attached to about 5,000 bees in Tasmania next summer. The scientists are creating the sensor units which have about 1mm2 in size to attach to the smaller insects like mosquitoes.
